Phlebotomy: Certificate

Program Mission

The mission of the Phlebotomy certificate program is to develop qualified trained phlebotomists through sound pedagogical approaches, technical training, and robust clinical experiences to the health science student population and the local healthcare community. We serve as a pathway for both direct employment and as a stepping stone to other professions. Our mission aligns with the institutional mission by creating access to inclusive, diverse educational experiences.

Program Learning Outcomes

Competent in collecting and processing biological specimens and other substances
Recognize factors that affect procedures and results, and taking appropriate actions within predetermined limits when corrections are indicated

The Phlebotomy Certificate curriculum prepares students for entry-level positions in hospitals, clinics and other health care settings, where they collect blood samples from patients, perform related technical procedures and process the associated clerical tasks.

As vital members of the health care team, phlebotomists work closely with patients and require good communication and organizational skills. To be successful, phlebotomists should be practical and accurate, able to inspire confidence in others and to put patients at ease. Phlebotomists need to be skilled at collecting blood and other specimens correctly to procure high-quality specimens for laboratory analysis. The Phlebotomy Certificate program emphasizes a combination of phlebotomy theory and practical application necessary for successful employment.

Graduates may qualify for employment in hospitals, clinics, physicians’ offices and other health care settings. After completing requirements, graduates are eligible to sit for a national certification exam.

Program Notes

Graduates of the Phlebotomy Certificate program are eligible for certification by the American Society of Clinical Pathology Board of Registry (ASCP) and the National Certification Agency for Clinical Laboratory Personnel (NCA), among others, as graduates of a structured phlebotomy program; students must verify that they meet the specifications for eligibility for their specific certification program.

There are not specific prerequisites for entry into the Program, but recommended preparatory high school-level coursework includes:

4 units Regents-level English
3 units Regents-level Math
3 units Regents-level Biology

Over 50% of the coursework is available online, however, students will be required to take the phlebotomy courses in the classroom.

The certificate program accepts students annually in the Fall and Spring Semesters. At the end of their studies, students will also complete clinical training (160 hours) in hospital laboratories affiliated with the program to provide hands-on experience as well as excellent training for immediate employment.

The Phlebotomy Certificate is one of many health-related certificates embedded within the Health Studies degree program.

Many students use this certificate as preparation for an entry-level position in a healthcare facility and eventually transfer to another program in the Health Sciences division.
