AS1 Degree Option for Academically Gifted Students
SUNY Broome’s one-year AS1 option offers the opportunity to attain a two-year university diploma at a fraction of the cost!
SUNY Broome offers a One Year Associate in Science Degree option (AS1). This challenging option will allow ambitious students with an interest in science to earn a two-year university-level degree at a fraction of the cost of a private, four-year institution.
Like the AA1 program, the AS1 Degree initiative is an accelerated and enriching experience. However, a strong foundation of core math and lab science offerings sets the AS1 option apart. This academically rigorous option is an excellent springboard for any science student interested in transferring to a four-year institution.
Our focus is to offer an accelerated, academically demanding program that will propel students into highly competitive colleges and universities. The courses provide a strong grounding in the sciences and demand a high level of laboratory skills and critical thinking. At the same time, we have infused seminar courses that encourage students to explore their love for science and develop research skills that will be invaluable in their future careers.
From a practical standpoint, AS1 is a very fiscally sound option for students bound for top-flight universities. But more importantly, AS1 students at SUNY Broome will receive one-on-one direction coupled with excellent quality instruction, setting the stage for upper level courses as they move on to pursue their academic goals.
Students who rank in the top 10% of their graduating class are encouraged to apply to the AS1 Program and will be reviewed by a selection committee.
AS1 Admission Criteria:
Interested students should have completed the following before entering AS1…
- English – Prior completion of a College Writing I course or a grade of 90 or better on the ELA Regents. Accepted AS1 students will enter a 200-level English course with other AS1 students.
- Mathematics – Students should have completed a college-level Pre-Calculus course, or Algebra II/Trigonometry with a Regents score of 85 or better.
- Sciences – Students should have completed a minimum of three years of high school sciences and should have completed the college equivalent of 3-4 semesters of lab science.*
* These requirements may be met through Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate (generally Higher Level), Fast Forward coursework, or transfer credit.
Upon completion of the AS1 degree, candidates will have completed 61 credits. A majority of these credits will focus on a solid Math and Science foundation. Other courses will include SUNY-approved General Education in Basic Communication, the Arts, Humanities, Western and Other World Civilizations, U.S. History, and Social Sciences.
