AA1 Degree Option for Academically Gifted Students
SUNY Broome’s One-Year Option Offers Two Years of University Education at a Fraction of the Cost
SUNY Broome Community College offers a one-year associate degree option offering the equivalent of two years of university-level instruction at a fraction of the cost of a private, four-year institution. Aimed at academically gifted high school students, the new One Year Associate in Arts Degree option (AA1) enrolled its first class in 2014.
The AA1 Degree Initiative is an accelerated and enriching experience targeted for a cohort of academically motivated students, which includes four seminar courses, an academic portfolio, and a capstone research project. No other associate degree program in New York State offers this level of intellectual rigor.
Our focus is to offer an accelerated, academically demanding option that will propel students into highly competitive colleges and universities. The courses are deeply rooted in the liberal arts and demand a high level of critical thinking, analysis, and synthesis. At the same time, we’ve incorporated career components that can help students begin to draw their post-collegiate future into view. From a practical standpoint, AA1 is a very fiscally sound option for students bound for top-flight universities.
For example, the average 2015-2016 yearly tuition among seven Ivy League universities is $47,256 per year plus room and board. The 2015-2016 tuition at SUNY Broome for the year is $4,224.
