Competitive Composite Score and Prerequisite information
Admission to the SUNY Broome ADN program is based on a student’s composite score. The composite score is calculated based on the following:
- Cumulative Grade Point Average: A student’s cumulative grade point average is based on a calculation of the student’s entire transcript or the student’s last 24 credits completed at SUNY Broome or an accredited institution. Whichever calculation provides the student the greater advantage will be used. Cumulative Grade Point Average accounts for up to seven (7) points towards a student’s composite score. Cumulative grade point averages below a 2.0 or a high school average below 74 receive no points in this category and are considered unqualified for competitive admission.
- Pre-requisite Grade Point Average*: The pre-requisite grade point average is based upon the student’s most recent two (2) attempts of each of the following pre-requisite requirements:
- Regents Biology (minimum grade of 74 awarded in the course and passed the Regents Biology exam) or one of the following developmental or college-level Biology courses:
- BIO 090 (4 credits)
- BIO 131 (4 credits)
- BIO 132 (4 credits)
- BIO 117 (4 credits)
- BIO 118 (4 credits)
- Regents Algebra 2/Trigonometry (minimum grade of 74 awarded in the course and passed the Regents Algebra 2/Trigonometry exam) or one of the following developmental or college-level math courses:
- MAT 096 (4 credits)
- MAT 124 (3 credits)
- MAT 136 (4 credits)
- MAT 156 (4 credits)
- MAT 181 (4 credits)
- Regents Chemistry (minimum grade of 74 awarded in the course and passed the Regents Chemistry exam) or one of the following developmental or college-level Chemistry courses:
- CHM 090 (4 credits)
- CHM 141 (4 credits)
- CHM 142 (4 credits)
- CHM 145 (4 credits)
- CHM 146 (4 credits)
- Regents Biology (minimum grade of 74 awarded in the course and passed the Regents Biology exam) or one of the following developmental or college-level Biology courses:
*This means that the pre-requisite grade point average for admissions consideration to the SUNY Broome ADN program is excluded from the college’s Fresh Start policy. Pre-requisite grade point average accounts for up to seven (7) points towards a student’s composite score. A pre-requisite grade point average below 2.0 or a high school average for these three pre-requisite subjects in this category below a 74 receives no points in this category and is considered unqualified for competitive admission. Please note that pre-requisites taken in high school are only eligible for consideration as pre-requisite courses if the student has received a minimum grade of 74 in each subject and passed the Regents exam in that subject.
- HESI A2 Score: The A2 test must be taken no more than one calendar year prior to the date of application submission. HESI A2 Score accounts for up to seven (7) points towards a student’s composite score. A cumulative score below 75% on the A2 test will result in no points awarded.
- Residency Status: Students are eligible for one-half (1/2) a point towards their composite score based on their residency status.
- Military Status: Students who are veterans of the Unites States Armed Forces are eligible for receiving one-half (1/2) a point towards their composite score.
Based on the above, a maximum composite score of 36 points is possible. Admission to the SUNY Broome ADN program is competitive. Composite scores are calculated for applications. Based on the number of seats available in the program for each admission period, students with the top composite scores will be extended an offer of admission to the program. Based on the diversity of applications received each admissions cycle, the cut off composite score for admissions will vary each cycle.
HESI A2 Exam
Admission Exam Review Book Flyer (pdf)The HESI A2 Exam is a required component of the nursing application. The exam is composed of specific domains:
- Biology: This section covers biology basics, water biological molecules, metabolism, cells, cellular respiration, photosynthesis, etc.
- Chemistry: This section covers chemical equations and reactions, the periodic table, atomic structure, nuclear chemistry, chemical bonding, etc.
- Math: This section covers basic addition, subtraction, multiplication, fractions, decimals, ratios, proportions, household measures, general math facts, etc.
- Reading Comprehension: This section provides reading scenarios to measure reading comprehension, identifying the main idea, finding the meaning of words in context, making logical inferences, etc.
- Personality and Learning Style: This section assesses the student’s preferred learning style. It is not part of the overall test score but provides the college with demographic information about an incoming class’ overall learning style.
The HESI exam should be taken by those students seeking admission to the SUNY Broome ADN program who have completed all pre-requisite coursework. Since the test covers content taught in the pre-requisite subjects, students might be inadequately prepared for the A2 Exam if they take it prior to completion of all pre-requisite coursework.
The HESI A2 Exam may be attempted no more than two times in a one-year period prior to submission of an application to the SUNY Broome ADN program. If a student attempts the exam two times during this period of time, the higher score of the two attempts will be the score counted in the calculation of the composite score. If the student attempts the exam more than two times in the calendar year prior to application submission, only the highest of the first two attempts will be accepted for consideration in calculating the composite score.
The college does not offer any preparatory courses specifically for the HESI A2 Exam. Students may, however, seek out internet guides or resource materials at a bookstore. The college also does not offer testing fee waivers for the A2 Exam.
The HESI A2 Exam will be offered at various times throughout the year. Students who are ready to take the test should check the testing schedule and sign up for a testing session. It is the responsibility of students to make sure they schedule their HESI exam to ensure the exam is taken no more than one calendar year prior to the date of application submission. If an applicant is not granted admission to the program and reapplies a year later, they will need to retake the HESI A2 Exam to ensure it is current (scores are not more than one calendar year old) at the time of reapplication submission.

ATI-TEAS Exam Information
The ATI-TEAS was developed to evaluate the academic readiness of applicants to health science programs, including nursing. You may choose to take the ATI TEAS instead of the HESI A2 exam. Both examinations are ranked with the same criteria for competitive admissions. SUNY Broome is currently utilizing the ATI-TEAS remote exam option. Please familiarize yourself with the following information on how to take the exam using Proctorio – a remote proctoring platform.
